MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT
Another spring has sprung and it seems my design jobs, though small,
are starting to happen again. I hope that is the case for all of
you as well.
I want to remind each chapter that elections
for chapter officers are necessary before June 1, 2010. This is a
great time to have a chapter meeting. Let's get some of the newer
members involved if we can.
We just had our 50th Annual Conference in San
Luis Obispo. We were joined by Steve Mickley National AIBD
Executive Director and Viki Wooster AIBD Convention Committee
Chairperson and member of the Oregon Society. Our tour focused on
sustainable residential design. We had presentations at a straw
bale winery and a sustainable designed complex of offices, research,
and residential use. After wine tasting and a picnic lunch in the
California March sunshine, we were off to the Architecture Dept at Cal
Poly. The Department Head of the school gave us a tour of the
student design labs.
That evening we had a trade show and shared
food, drink, and building products old and new, with vendors. I want to
again thank the vendors that came: JamesHardie,
Kraftmaid, Hardy Frames, Icynene, Loomis Tank Center, Simpson
Strongtie, and Stego Industries. They were very generous
with their time and monetary sponsorship.
The second day of the conference we had three
educational seminars: a presentation on Vernacular Residential
Architecture, a presentation on the revival of downtown San Luis
Obispo, and a presentation on the life and designs of Julia
Morgan. The conference ended with lunch and awards presentations
to the members.
The
story behind the First Place Remodel/Addition and Best of Show award:
(Richard tried
to tell this story at the luncheon when he was recieving his award, but
emotion overcame the moment, so here is the story. ED.)
The remodel plans were made approximately 5 years ago, as
the dream vacation home for Melanie Conroy, with her husband Bob's
help. It took over a year to go through the Design Review process
with the City. The plans were approved for construction but
the project was put on hold when it was discovered that Melanie had
ovarian cancer. The Planning Permit was extended by the City as
requested. The treatment did not work and Melanie did not
survive.
About a year later Bob wanted to remodel the home in her name and
memory. It was important to him that her name remain on the
project drawings.
Now of all things, on my way to the Spa several
weeks ago, Bob Conroy walked in behind me and said he had been thinking
about me all of yesterday. This happened to be the day that I was
receiving the award for his home's remodel. He was going to call
me today to set a time for a walk through. I was able to tell him
that I had received the award and had one to give to him. He is
very pleased to receive the first place award.

Launching of our
new benefit program, "SYNDESIS" !
SYNDESIS, ( sin' - de - sis ): noun (the
Greek word meaning "connection"); the state of being bound,
linked or connected together
I am writing this article to share a new program that our California
Society has adopted. It's called Syndesis. Its
purpose is to connect new members of AIBD California Society with its
long-term members on a regular basis, regardless of geographical
location within the state.
At the core, this
program is intended to be an informal mentoring program, aimed at the
structure and history of AIBD, as well as the issues of practicing
building design.
For the program to
work, there are two categories of members required - Mentors and New
Members. The Mentors are those that have been a member of AIBD for over
ten years, and for many, have served on chapter, state and national
leadership roles. The New Members are those that have less than five
years membership and looking for insights and camaraderie from those
that are experienced in our field. In exchange, it may be so, that the
new members can share their recent experience in CAD software or other
technological advances to the experienced members, taking part of the
sharing benefit.
Here's how the
program works. On the second Wed. of every month, the New Member will
call their Mentor, and have a conversation about AIBD or practice
issues. This phone call is considered the "Syndesis",
the connection between experienced and new members. (I suggest that
each New Member arrange the time of their phone call ahead of time so
that both parties are available.) The program is set up for six
months at a time for a total of two years for the new member. At each
six months, the Mentor or New Member may request to stay matched, or
request a new match, or opt to end their participation.
Here are some
suggestions for topics to be discussed -
- Share
experienced member's participation in AIBD.
- Past events
of the exemption rule and its prevalence in CA.
- History of
AIBD and its Registered Residential Designers in CA.
- The 'A'
words and the use or non-use of them.
- What the
AIBD abbreviation stands for after one's name.
- The NCBDC
exam.
- Finding
ways to contribute to the professional organization.
- Discuss why
staying a member has benefited professionals.
- Awareness
of upcoming State & National Conferences.
- Awareness
of upcoming Design Competitions.
- Past
Conference or Convention experiences.
- Continued
Education.
- Practice
issues.
- State Code
Updates or code questions.
Our launching of
Syndesis will occur this month on April 14! If I
haven't already contacted you about participating at either level,
please call or send me an email and I'll be very happy to make
recommendations for a match. I have volunteered to head this program
and will keep track of the available Mentors and number of New Members.
Please address all your questions or comments to me.

PRODUCT CORNER

Dropbox is a
teriffic application that you can download, free, to help organize and
save all of your important files, docs and photos. We've used it,
here, to easily share the photos from the Design Competition. No
need to email huge files! Simply put those files in a Dropbox and
use the Share function to give access to the recipiants of your choice.
When
you download Dropbox, you get 1.5 gigabytes of storage
space FREE! You can buy more, but you can also
earn more by referring friends. When they sign up, you get more
free space (I, personally, am up to 4.0 gigs)
Whatever
files you place in your Dropbox are constantly monitored and
updated, providing on-line back up to protect all of your
drawings, photos, and documents!
Take the tour and
see what it is all about!

BACK TO THE OLD DRAWING
Musings
of Veteran Designer
THE 'SPECIAL' CLIENT!
Reading President Richard Emigh's comments, above, about his
"Best in Show" award and the client that inspired the design, I
am reminded that we all have, from time to time, a client that is
'special.' Something about them makes them stand out above the rest.
It's not the client that wants to build the biggest house, or spend the
most money. It has more to do with the person than the
project. In Richard's case, it is the tragedy of the situation
ameliorated by the subsequent completion of the project in
the original spirit intended.
A client of mine stands out in
my mind because of the sheer joy she expressed in the
creation of a space exclusively for her. It was a
modest studio atop a garage, but it was truly her space. One
of many children and mother of several of her own, she seldom
had anything that was not hand-me-down or make-do. Even her
studio is used to make wonderful quilts out of re-purposed fabrics, but
the space was new and bright and finished in colors and materials of her
choosing. Her delight in every phase of the planning and
construction makes her one of my "special" clients.
Send your story of that 'special'
client to share in future issues of California Focus aibd-ca-newsletter@comcast.net
