 MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT:

Recently the National Office of AIBD asked what records we have on one of our long time members, who recalls having been given life time membership in 1985.   I could not find any record of this; however in reviewing the past newsletters I discovered the following:

Two articles in 1950 United Designers Association (to become AIBD) "Design News" .

1-"Three Coins in a Fountain".  If you as a designer could toss three coins in the fountain and get three wishes for the good of the profession, what would those wishes be?

...first would be that the designer might have a name..that they might legally call themselves a designer..a building designer..just about anything that would indicate to the public what type of work they do.

...second wish would be that the building designer could cease notifying clients in writing that they were not an Architect.

...third wish would be that they could legally hire and engineer to do the calculations necessary to make their buildings safe and sound.

2- "Architectural Board Hearing Coming Up"

...A Senate Interim Committee on Licensing Business and Professions was to hold a hearing in San Francisco at the State Building.  The article goes on to state, that the United Designers Association, Inc was to attend.

Seems to me that issues with Building Designers are still the same today as 60 years ago.

June 1956 "Design News" reports, that the spouses liked that they were invited to the Convention and tours, as well as attending the dinner events.

Spouses do add to our conferences, thank you all for coming.

NEWS FROM NATIONAL

The following is an excerpt of the memo send by the president of NCBDC, Leonard Vogel:

The Board of Examiners and the full Council, by a 2/3 majority, voted to accept the "Agreement and Plan for Merger" with AIBD.  Similar motions were passed by the Board of Directors and the Board of Delegates of AIBD, as well as, changes in the AIBD Bylaws were voted in that now create independent Councils within AIBD.  The NCBDC will be the first of these Councils.

As a result of these votes there are NO immediate changes.  All CPBD's will continue to operate as before and still contact our California office as well as our current (and newly re-elected) officers.

Musings of Veteran Designer

I spoke recently, on the occasion of his 70th wedding anniversary, with one of the original members of AIBD.  He was a member of AIBD's predecessor, UDA (United Designers Association,) as well.  He is concerned about his lifetime membership status. Both California and National are working at verifying his credentials, but the historical records of this association are incomplete or missing.

It is unfortunate than so much of the history of this organization seems to have been misplaced or lost entirely in the move of the national offices from Sacramento, CA to the East coast.  The background of any organization, its "family tree" so to speak, is important to its ongoing success.  Remembering where we came from, how far we've come, and where we hope to go is the validation of our existence.

The following is listed on the AIBD National Web Site as the "History" of AIBD:

Since 1950, AIBD has provided building designers with educational resources, and has developed nationwide design standards and a code of ethics for the building design profession.

Everything else on the "History" page tells what AIBD is today, what it does for current members, what it does for the future.  It lists and explains associated councils and organizations.  It's not, by any definition, history.

I hope to sit down with this venerable member in the very near future and develop a written history of the early years of this organization.  The sources for this first hand testimony are not going to be available indefinitely.  I feel it is vital to both our state organization (the site of the organization's inception) and the national organization, to have this kind of background as part of the fiber of our organization.  I encourage anyone acquainted with early members of the organization to do the same.
